Key Tajweed Guidelines for Huroof-e-Maddah
Understanding the conditions for Maddah letters is essential for correct Quranic pronunciation:
- Alif Maddah (الف مداہ): When an Alif (ا) is empty (has no vowel) and is preceded by a letter with a Fatha / Zabar (e.g., بَا).
- Waw Maddah (واؤ مداہ): When a Waw has a Sakin / Sukoon (وْ) and is preceded by a letter with a Damma / Pesh (e.g., بُوْ).
- Ya Maddah (یاء مداہ): When a Ya has a Sakin / Sukoon (يْ) and is preceded by a letter with a Kasra / Zer (e.g., بِيْ).
- Duration of Elongation: All three Maddah letters must be stretched smoothly for the duration of 1 Alif (2 counts or approximately 1 to 1.5 seconds) without sudden stops or over-stretching.
